Chappals and eggs were hurled by suspected right-wing activists at a meeting addressed by actor politician Kamal Hassan in Velayadhupalayam in Aravakuruchi on Thursday night.
The chappals and eggs were hurled when Kamal was getting down from the dais after addressing an election meeting. However, both the chappals and eggs fell front of the dais and no one was injured.
Activists of Kamal’s Makkal Needhi Maiyam thrashed the miscreant and handed over him to the police. They also blocked roads to demand action against the miscreants. Karur district superintendent of police Vikram arrived on the spot and persuaded the party men to disperse after assuring them of action.
Earlier in the day, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court threw out a petition filed by Saravanan, a lawyer, seeking a halt to Kamal’s campaign on the ground that his comment about Hindu terror had disturbed peace and communal harmony.
The bench cited the Delhi High Court which also rejected a similar petition, and said Election Commission alone was empowered to take action if Kamal’s speech was violative of the model code of conduct.
This was the second such incident in Avakuruchi. On Sunday, 50 Hindu Munnani members were taken into custody when they held a demonstration in protest against Kamal’s comment that independent India’s first Hindu terrorist was Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.
