Thoppil Mohammed Meeran, eminent Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi award winner, died in Pettai in southern Tirunelveli town in the early hours of Friday. He was ailing for some time. He was 75 and is survived by his wife and two sons.
Native of Thengaipattinam in Kanyakumari district, Meeran was born in Nagercoil in the same district. He later shifted to Pettai in Tirunelveli, a Muslim majority area. Meeran had written several novels and short stories in Tamil. His novel Saivu Naarkali ( Easy chair) won the Sahitya Akademi award in 1997.
His other novels are Oru Kadalora Kiramathin Kathai (1988, The Story of coastal village),Turaimugam (1991, Harbour),Koonan Thoppu (1993, The Grove of a Hunchback) and Anju vannam theru ( 2011 "Five coloured street").
