Flying squad seizes 3.5 kg of gold jewels from car

Madurai, May 6: The election flying squad officials and police seized gold jewels weighing around 3.5 kilograms from a car near Chittampatti tollgate on the Tiruchirapalli-Madurai four lane here on Monday.

Official sources said the flying squad and police intercepted a car coming to Madurai from Chennai and upon search found the gold jewels being transported without proper documents. Inquiries with the four occupants of the car revealed that the gold jewels belonged to a leading jewellery firm in Chennai and brought to Madurai for supply to a local jewel shop.

The transportation of gold jewels was in violation of model code of conduct as Thirupparankundram assembly segment in Madurai district goes for a by-election on May 19. The car along with gold jewels was seized and brought to the district election office, where the valuables was deposited in the treasury. The officials have also informed the Income Tax department about the seizure. UNI
