Chennai, Apr 21 : Customs officials have seized 1,063 kg gold
valued at Rs 34.59 lakh and foreign cigarettes worth Rs 1.44 lakh and
arrested one person at the Anna International airport here.
A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said the
officials have detected two cases of smuggling of gold and three cases
of cigarette smuggling. Acting on intelligence, two passengers Mohammed Gouse (37) of Bhatkal in Karnataka and Absar Ali (26) of Trichy, who arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight separately, were intercepted by officers at the exit of arrival hall on suspicion of carrying gold.
On questioning they appeared to be nervous and evasive in their
replies. On examination, the officials found a rubbery material concealed in their rectum, besides two gold ingots totally weighing 1.063 kg of 24 karat purity valued at Rs.34.59 lakhs and seized them.

In another incident, three passengers, who arrived from Dubai by
an Indigo flight were intercepted and on examination of their
baggage, the officials found 25,22,25 cartons respectively of
Benson and Hedges cigarettes and seized them.
A total of 72 cartons valued at Rs 1.44 lakhs were recovered and
seized under the Customs Act, 1962. In all, gold and cigarettes totally worth Rs 36 lakhs were seized by the Customs officials.UNI
