Sadiq Basha’s ghost comes to haunt Stalin

With elections to 39 Lok Sabha seats and 22 Assembly seats set for April 18, the death by hanging of Chennai-based realtor Sadiq Basha in the wake of the 2G scam in March 2011 has come to haunt DMK president M K Stalin .

Sadiq Basha, who was close to  2g scam prime accused and former Telecom Minister A Raja, was found  dead in his house in Chennai after he was questioned in connection with the scam by the CBI.

His wife Rehabanu has petitioned the President of India for a re-investigation, alleging foul play in his death.

The CBI investigated the 2G scam in which Raja and late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi were indicted. A special CBI court in New Delhi acquitted all the accused as none of the telecom officials came forward to give evidence against Raja, who was then Telecom Minister, about out of turn allotment of spectrum to businessmen and their alleged  quid pro quo investment of Rs 200 in Kalaignar TV in which Kanimozhi was a director.

The CBI’s  appeal against the lower court verdict is in the Supreme Court.

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisami has said the unnatural death of Sadiq Bhasha will be investigated if Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a fresh mandate.

Palanisami has taken up this issue to hit back at Stalin who has accused him of involvement in the five unnatural deaths in late Chief Jayalilatha’s Kodanad estate following a break-in.

In her petition, Sadiq Basha’s wife has sought a re-investigation into his death. She said in her representation that in 2003, Sadiq Basha started a real estate company in which Raja’s wife Parameshwari, brother A. Ramachandran and nephew R.P. Paramesh Kumar had stakes .She alleged that her husband was later sidelined from this company.

The 2G scam broke out in 2010 and her husband was investigated by the CBI since he was a close associate of Mr. Raja. During the course of investigation, Bhasha came under pressure, more so after he told the CBI that Stain met Sahid Balwa, a Mumbai –based realtor who was one of the beneficiaries of the spectrum allotment. Sadiq Bhasha died on March 16, 2011 under suspicious circumstances, she alleged.

Following the publication of a memorial advertisement in newspaper, she alleged that she and her brother were attacked on March 19. While they were travelling in a car, some unidentified persons threw knives and stones at the car, she said.

Raja is a DMK candidate in Nilgiris while Kanimozhi is taking on Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan in Thoothokudi.

Kanimozhi is a Rajya Sabha member of the DMK. Her BJP rival Tamillisai has not made 2G scam an issue. Rather the focus is on the anti-Sterlite agitation and the death of 13 protestors in police firing.
