Celebrations broke out in Salem and four other districts and farmers burst crackers and distributed sweets after the Madras High Court quashed a controversial Rs 10,000 crore project for an eight-line super expressway between Chennai and Salem.
Not only the entire opposition including the two left parties, but also the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) which is now aligned with the AIADMK welcomed it with its leader Anbumani saying his party has always opposed the anti-people project. Anbumani, PMK Youth Wing leader and sitting Lok Sabha MP, in a statement said the State Government should not go in appeal against the high court order. He said he would file a caveat in the Supreme Court to protect farmers interest in case any appeal was filed.
He said though the court has said that a decision on the project could be taken after eliciting the views of the farmers and getting the environmental clearance, the PMK's stand was that the project should be shelved in toto by the State and Central Governments.
General secretaries of the CPI and the CPM R Mutharasan and G Balakrishnan said it was a mortal blow to the Edappadi Palanisami Government which sought to thrust it on the people. Farmer leader P R Pandian said the Government should not go in appeal against this order.
