Saveetha Hosp gets first organ donation

Chennai, Apr 1: The Chennai-based Saveetha Hospitals on Monday received first human organs donated by a 42-year-old brain dead patient. The patient was a hardware shop employee from Sriperumbudur town of Kancheepuram district.

The occasion also witnessed the awareness on GOAL – Gift of a Life Foundation, an initiative to spread awareness on organ donation. The family members of the donor were honoured during the event. The donor met with a road accident and sustained severe head injuries. He was admitted to the hospital following arachnoid bleed and brain stem dysfunction. After being monitored and supported for 10 days, the patient was declared brain dead. After counselling, his family came forward and agreed to donate his organs, which were transplanted to give a new lease of life to the needy patients.

Dr N M Veeraiyan, Chancellor, Saveetha Group of Institutions said, “it was the first organ donation done at our hospital.'' ''After the patient was declared brain-dead, we counselled his family about the benefits of organ donation and saving precious human lives and the family agreed to donate his organs'', he said, a hospital release said.
