Income-tax officials continued their raids on an engineering college run by an educational trust of DMK treasurer Durai Murugan for the third day running on Monday. His son and DMK Lok Sabha candidate Kathir Anand approached the Madras High Court against this and Justice Anita Sumant promised to take it up on Tuesday.
The raids, which began late on Friday night on Durai Murugan’s residence in Katpadi and spilled over to Saturday, covered farm houses of an associate as well as an engineering college run by his educational trust. From his house, officials recovered cash of Rs 19 lakh out of which they allowed Rs 6 lakh as that of his son Kathir Anand and another Rs 3 lakh as belonging to his family members. They calculated Rs 10.5 lakh as unaccounted and seized it.
They also recovered documents from the engineering college managed by Kathir Anand in Vellore State chief electoral officer Satyabrata Sahoo told reporters at the Chennai Secretariat that the raids were conducted at the request of the Vellore district election officer. The election monitoring team the Income tax Department which carried out the searches would report to the Vellore district election officer.
Sahoo said: We have to see how of much of the cash seized is party money and how much is the candidate’s. Only thereafter action, if any can, be considered”.
