The long wait is over. Congress president Rahul Gandhi is to contest from Wayanad in the coming Lok Sabha election. The announcement was made by party senior leader AK Antony at a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday.
His candidature for the second seat in Wayanad besides his regular Amethi was in the air for over a week.
Antony said Congress leadership in Kerala had requested Rahul to contest from the State and finally he agreed.
“Rahulji has given his consent to contest from two seats, very happy to inform you that he will also contest from Wayanad in Kerala,” Antony said.
Rahul is to come in place of T Siddiq, who had announced his withdrawal for his party chief immediately after party leaders announced nine days ago that the request had been made and would be accepted.
The delay in the announcement had left Opposition UDF allies unhappy which they expressed through a message to Delhi. Poll campaign had come to a near standstill for over a week.
Besides the Left parties had voiced concern over Rahul's candidature as it was believed to send wrong signals in the fight against BJP.
