In a significant political development, Makkal Needhi Maiam founder and actor Kamal Haasan has met with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Monday.
Political experts wonder about the significance of the meeting as Kamal Haasan is not part of grand alliance. Earlier there was a high speculation that Kamal Haasan will become part of the Congress-led Mahagathbandhan.
The meeting between Kamal and Mamta Banerjee gained importance as Kamal Haasan and DMK fought each other recently. MK Stalin in a recent TV Interview said that Kamal is good actor but not a good politician. On Sunday at Coimbatore, Kamal countered DMK chief Stalin saying he is a good actor who wants to make good things for people.
Kamal Haasan on Sunday released the names of candidates as also the party manifesto. Surprising everybody, Kamal Haasan announced that he is not contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections or the 18 Assembly by-elections being held simultaneously in Tamil Nadu. Instead he will campaign for his party candidates in all the 39 Lok Sabha constituencies as well as in the18 Assembly constituencies. He stated that there was no cause for worry since all the candidates were his faces. Haasan said instead of being in the palanquin, he preferred to shoulder it.
At this juncture, what hidden agenda was set behind the meeting was the million dollar question to be answered. As DMK Chief Stalin is a good friend, Mamata may want to mellow the differences of opinion between the actor and the DMK Chief.
