The Congress on Sunday announced that it was fielding former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram from Sivaganga in the coming Lok Sabha election.
It has already announced candidates for eight other seats from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
Karti did not figure in the first list of nine candidates released earlier. The party held up the name for Sivaganga as Karti and his father are mired in the Aircel-Maxis and INX Media cases involving illegal clearance given for overseas investments.
He will face BJP national secretary H Raja in the constituency, which is the home turf of both the candidates.
In the Aircel-Maxis case, a special CBI Court in New Delhi has given protection to father and son from arrest till March 25.
Karti is also facing INX Media Ltd case filed by the Enforcement Directorate over alleged money laundering. The case is that Karti Chidambaram used his influence with Chidambaram, when he was Finance Minister in 2007, to get Foreign Investment Promotion Board clearance for Rs 305 crore overseas investment in INX Media owned by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea.
The Mukherjeas are in jail in connection with the murder of Sheena Bora, daughter of Indrani.
Karti (46) was arrested in this case in February last year and is now on bail.
The Aircel- Maxis also involves illegal approval given to Malaysian Indian Sivasankaran to pick up stakes in his Indian mobile company by fellow Malaysian businessman T Anandakrishnan.
