Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan and Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan are among the five BJP candidates from Tamil Nadu in the coming Lok Sabha elections announced by the central leadership in New Delhi. All five are contesting from their native districts.
Pon Radhakrishnan is seeking re-election from Kanyakumari and Tamilisai will test her luck in Thuthookudi. Likewise, BJP national secretary H Raja has been fielded Sivaganga under which his native town Karaikudi.
Pon Radhakrishnan will face a yet to be announced Congress candidate while Tamilisai will take on DMK Rajya Sabha member Kanimozhi in Thoothukudi. Both the constituencies are predominantly Nadar and all the contests are from that community.
H Raja who is entering the fray from Sivaganga, of which his native Karaikudi is a segment, will face a Congress rival. Sivaganga was once the stronghold of senior Congress leader P Chidambaram. After winning by a narrow margin in 2009 and losing the 2014, Chidambaram has opted for the Rajya Sabha.
Former BJP State president C P Radhakrishnan is contesting from Coimbatore where he will be locked in a race with the CPIM. Former AIADMK Minister and a recent entry to BJP Nainar Nagendran will face an IUML rival in Ramanathapuram.
The BJP is contesting five out of 39 Lok Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu in alliance with the AIADMK. The two parties have left Puducherry to N R Congress.
The Congress, the CPM and the IUML are part of the DMK-led secular alliance which will confront the AIADMK-BJP combine.
