A five-member CBI team on Friday raided the house of AIADMK’s Ramanathapuram MP and Tamil Nadu Wakf Board chief Anwar Raja in connection with alleged irregularities in administration of a college in Madurai run by the board.
The CBI raided Anwar Raja’s house in Ramanathapuram on the basis of a directive of the Madurai bench of Madras High Court to enquire into charges of irregularities in appointment of faculty and other staff in the college. The CBI will submit its report to the court.
The team seized documents from Raja’s house and obtained his signature on them, reports said. Justice P Velmurugan of the high court last January ordered a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff at MSS Waqf Board College.
Justice P Velmurugan directed the CBI to file a report within six months on a petition which also alleged that Tamil Nadu Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel and MP Anwar Raja were involved in the cash for jobs scam.
The judge said the State Home Secretary and the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) should cooperate with the CBI.
The court issued the order on a petition by Sardhar Basha who alleged more than 30 appointments had been made in violation of University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines and after taking huge sums of money by the in-charge secretary of the college and local AIADMK leader Jamal Mohideen.
The petitioner alleged that Mohideen was a "benami" of Anwar Raja and that he had collected Rs. 30-35 lakh for each appointment. He further alleged that Mohideen had shared the amount collected with Kafeel and Raja.
The teaching faculty appointed by him had not cleared the National Eligibility Test or the State Eligibility Test, which was a violation of the UGC norms, the petitioner submitted. He told the court that the DVAC had not taken any action on his complaint.
Anwar Raja was denied ticket by the AIADMK in the coming Lok Sabha election and the seat was allotted to it ally BJP. He was the only one among the 37 AIADMK MPs who opposed the muthalak bill of the BJP Government in the Lok Sabha.
Hindu Makkal Katchi leader Arjun Sampath congratulated the AIADMK for not giving even a single seat to Muslims in this election.
