The top two of the AIADMK, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy and Deputy O Pannerselvam on Wednesday hit the campaign trail from their native districts of Salem and Theni respectively.
They closely followed their rival and DMK chief M K Stalin, who launched the first phase ten days ago, did door to door canvassing in his native town of Tiruvavur from where his father and late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi got elected for the last time.
Edappadi in his campaign address in Salem said that Stalin was only working president of the DMK so long as Karunanidhi was alive and took over the leadership only after his passing. “This shows that even his father did not have confidence in him. How will people repose faith in him”, he asked. The main barb of the AIADMK leaders against Karunanidhi was that he promoted politics.
Now that AIADMK leaders post-Jaya have promoted their kin, they have changed tack. Towing the BJP line that Modi was proud to be a chowkidar (watchman or sentinel) Palanisami said “the country is safe in the hands of strong leader Modi”.
Pannerselvam accompanied his son and AIADMK candidate from Theni Ravindranath Kumar and canvassed votes. He said:” Dynastic politics is not illegal nor a big issue so long as people accept the candidate”.
