Thirumavalavan to contest from Chidambaram

The Viduthalai Chiruthigal Katchi, a Dalit party headed by Thol Thirumavalavan, on Sunday announced it would be contesting the coming Lok Sabha elections from Chidambaram ( R ) and Villupuram ( R) in alliance with the DMK-led secular front.

Thirumavalavan told reporters that he himself would be contesting from Chidambaram while general secretary D Ravikumar will fight from Villupuram.

Thirumavalavan will take on the AIADMK while Ravi Kumar will be pitted against traditional rival Pattali Makkal Katchi. The Dalits and Vanniars have been at logger heads for years.

Thirumavalavan won from Chidambaram in 2009, but lost in 2014. Ravi Kumar, a freelance journalist and activist is contesting for Lok Sabha for the first time though he won from Kattumannar Koil in the same Chidambaram segment in the 2006 Assembly elections.

The VCK leader said he would contest on free symbol while Ravi Kumar contest on the DMK’s Rising Sun symbol as the time was short and the Election Commission was yet to take a decision on a free symbol it had sought..

He said the VCK would contest three seats in Kerala and six in Andhra Pradesh on its own.
