Pollachi sex scandal puts AIADMK in dock

A major sex scandal involving a gang which lured girls through Facebook sexually abused them and silenced them through videos, has come to light in Pollachi with the arrest of four members.

It has assumed political dimension after the police arrested a local AIADMK functionary in a separate case on the charge that he threatened brother of a victim who lodged a police complaint and exposed the scandal.

The AIADMK on Monday swiftly expelled A Nagaraj, a local Amma Peravai functionary from Pollachi following his arrest. The same day, Assembly Deputy Speaker Pollachi Jayaraman met the press at the State Secretariat to deny any link while DMK President M K Stalin in a tweet demanded prompt action against the alleged sexual offenders.  Pollachi Jayaraman said he had already met the DG of Police to demand a speedy probe.

The main accused arrested four days ago are financier Thirunavakkarasu (26) and his alleged accomplices Sabarirajan, Vasanthkumar and Satish. Several lurid videos have gone viral since the arrest of the gang. Police say the gang had sexploited at least 50 women over a period of seven years.

Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K Pandiarajan said they had recovered four such videos from the accused after they were arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by a victim on Feb 24, believed to be a 19-year-old college student from Pollachi. He said a second victim had now been identified on the basis of recovered videos.

The complainant told Pollachi police that she was sexually assaulted by friends during a car ride and robbed of her gold chain. Pandiarajan said the second victim was a married woman and police could do nothing unless she came forward to lodge a complaint.

“Many other videos have been erased and we are trying to recover all of them”, the SP said, adding that he had ordered investigations into suicides by young girls in the last two years.

The police have also given a public call to the victims to come forward with their complaints.”If you are not comfortable with police, you can approach the magistrate,” Pollachi District Superintendent of Police Jayaraman has said.

Pandiarajan said videos recovered from the accused showed no evidence of involvement of political leaders as alleged by main accused Thirunavakkarasu. He also said none of the complaints had alleged rape and so cases had been registered under other sections of the IPC relating to criminal intimidation.

He said the case would be entrusted to a senior woman officer and efforts were on to get the four detained under the Goondas Act which will put them in jail up to a year.  UNI
