The DMK president M K Stalin said on Monday that his MPs Tiruchi Siva and Kanimozhi would represent to the Election Commission against its decision to hold by-elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly along with Lok Sabha polls only for 18 of 21 vacant seats.
Talking to reporters after discussions with party MPs and MLAs, Stalin questioned the explanation given by State Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo that elections to Aravakurichi,Tiruparakundram and Ottapidaram Assembly seats could not be held because of court cases.
He said courts had not granted any stay. The real reason, he said, was that the Election Commission was indirectly helping the beleaguered Edappadi Government.
He was apparently referring to the fact that the government has only a working majority after the disqualification of 18 pro-Dinakaran MLAs and it needs to win at least eight out of 21 seats to get even a simple majority in the Assembly
Asked whether the commission had given sufficient time for campaign , he said” I have already launched my campaign and addressed over 12,800 gram sabha meetings”. Stalin said the alliance would take final shape on Tuesday night after identification of constituencies for the Congress and Viduthalai Chiruthalgal, the communists and other allies.
The Congress PCC president K S Azhagiri and other leaders like former PCC chief K Thangabalu held second round of talks with DMK representatives on identifying the nine seats allotted to it in Tamil Nadu, besides the one Puducherry seat.
The VCK and the two communist parties have been allotted two seats each. Marumalarchi DMK of Vaiko has been given one Lok Sabha seat, plus one Rajya Sabha seat. Kongu Vella Makkal Katchi of Easwaran,, Puthiya Needhi Katchi of A C Shanmugham and Puthiya Janayaka Katchi of Pachamuthu have been given one seat each
After allotting 19 seats to allies, the DMK is left with 20.
