Chennai, Mar 2 : AICC President Rahul Gandhi will kick off Congress' campaign for the Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu on March 13, in which leaders of alliance partners, including the DMK, which is heading the Opposition front, were expected to participate.
Talking to reporters after a meeting of party office-bearers, TNCC President K S Alagiri on Saturday said Rahul would commence his campaign in Tamilnadu on March 13. The venue of the election rally would be decided by tomorrow, though party sources hinted that it would in all probability be in the temple town of Madurai, the most sought after venue for major political parties.
This would be the first public meeting of Rahul Gandhi in Tamil Nadu after becoming the Congress President. He said the DMK and leaders of other alliance were likely to participate in the rally, which was expected to be a show of strength of the Opposition Front.
The DMK, which had already clinched the seat sharing pact with Congress, IUML and the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK), was expected to finalise the agreement with other allies, including the MDMK, VCK, CPI, CPI(M) and MMK, ahead of Rahul Gandhi's meeting to ensure participation of the leaders of all alliance parties.
Under the seat-sharing pact, the DMK has allotted ten seats to Congress (nine in TN and the lone seat in Puducherry) and one each to the IUML and KMDK. However, the constituencies to be contested by the Congress, IUML and the KMDK, besides other alliances, were also expected to be identified in due course. (UNI)
