TN Govt confers M S award to S Janaki


The Tamil Nadu Government has chosen playback singer S Janaki for its M S Subbulakshmi award for singers. Along with Janaki, carnatic vocalists Bombay Sisters and T V Gopalakrishnan have also been chosen for the same award.

Likewise, it has chosen Vyjayanthimala for the Bala Saraswathi award for outstanding dancers. She will share the award with V P Dhananjayan and C V Chandrasekhar.

They are among the prominent recipients of the Kalaimamani awards being given after a gap of eight years. Poet and film song writer Pulamaipithan, villupattu ( folk song) artiste Subbu Arumugham and another folk singer Paravai Muniamma and Tamil writer activist Sivasankari have been chosen for the Bharathi award.

The awards for the period 2011 to 18 are dominated by film artistes. Among them are actors Vijaya Sethupathi, Karthik, Prabhu Deva, Priya Mani and “Kutty” Padmini, director Suresh Krishna, cinematagrapher Ravi Varman and playback singer Unnikrishnan.
