AIADMK will form mega alliance, says Minister

Senior AIADMK leader and State Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar has said that his party will form a mega alliance for the coming Lok Sabha elections and it will be announced after seats sharing arrangement is finalised.

Though he did not mention BJP, for obvious reasons, he said the AIADMK is open to alliance with all opposition parties ranged against the DMK except the breakaway Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam of T T V Dinakaran.

The alliance is likely to be finalised after Finance Minister O Pannerselvam presents the budget in the State Assembly on Friday. Like the Union budget, the State budget will also be pro-voter. The same evening party district secretaries have been called to met to discuss strategy for the Lok Sabha elections.

The party has aleady started receiving applications aspiring candidates. One of them is Deputy Chief Minister and party convenor O Pannerselvam’s son Raveendranath Kumar.

Besides the BJP, other parties which are likely to go with the AIADMK are Pattali Makkal Katchi and Puthiya Tamizhgam, a Dalit outfit led by Dr Krishnaswamy and AIADMK’s existing ally Republican Party of India’s Tamil Nadu leader S K Tamilarasan.

The Patali Makkal Katchi has a strong presence in the Vanniar belt in northern Tamil Nadu. Its youth wing leader Anbumani Ramadoss got elected from Dharmapuri as part of the NDA. He was Union Health Minister for a term.

Its founder Dr S Ramadoss and Anbumani Ramadoss met the press on Wednesday but refused to talk about alliance.

In the DMK front are the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim. The two left parties and Marumalarchi DMK of Vaiko are waiting in the wings. The DMK is not inclined to include the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi of Thol Thiruvamavalan for fear it may alienate the DMK from the other backward classes ranged against Pariahs, a sub-sect in the Scheduled Castes.

The big question mark is which way actor Vijayakanth’s Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam go? It had around 10 per cent when it came into being in 2006. Since then it has gone into decline. So is the health of Vijayakanth who has just returned from US after getting treatment for dipsomania. His wife Premalatha and brother-in-law Sudeesh are in virtual control. Neither the DMK nor the AIADMK will like to have Vijayakanth for health reasons.
