Chennai, Jan 28: In a major heist, masked men broke into a public sector bank and decamped with cash and jewellery from five lockers at Samayapuram in Trichy district of Tamil Nadu.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when the Manager and staff of the Punjab National Bank, located near Samayapuram Tollgate close to National Highway, reported for work after the weekend holidays. The burglars gained entry into the bank by making a gaping hole in the rear side of the wall using a gas welding machine, broke open five lockers and escaped with the booty. The amount of cash and jewellery stolen from the lockers was not immediately known.
The culprits had left behind the gas welding machine, a cylinder, a hammer and other items, in the bank before fleeing from the spot. Senior police officials, including Central Zone IG V Varadharaju and the District Superintendent of Police visited the spot and held a preliminary inquiry. Sniffer dogs, along with finger print experts and forensic experts were also pressed into action. Police were analysing the footages recorded in the CCTV cameras and said special teams were formed to nab the culprits. (UNI)
