Madurai, Jan 27: MDMK General Secretary Vaiko and scores of supporters were arrested on Sunday when they staged a black flag protest demonstration in protest against the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for laying the foundation stone for AIIMS here.

Mr Vaiko, who led the protest at the Madurai Periyar bus stand junction, said the protest was not against AIIMS, but against Mr Modi for betraying the interests of Tamils on various issues. Black balloons were also released during the agitation and placards with slogans 'Go back Modi' were carried by the protestors to express their condemnation for Mr Modi and the Centre for betraying the State on issues like Cauvery and Mekedatu.

Mr Vaiko said "laying foundation stone for the AIIMS now was nothing  but a political stunt and well timed ahead of the Lok Sabha polls." ''The BJP cannot set its foot in Tamil Nadu and it will be shown the door in the LS elections...this is the beginning of the end", he added. (UNI)
