Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend his maiden public meeting in Madurai on Sunday.
The Prime Minister will address an official meeting after laying the foundation stone for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Thoppur and inaugurating a slew of buildings and schemes in the State. Around 5,000 personnel have put in place as part of elaborate security arrangements. A team of the Special Protection Group is closely monitoring the arrangements.
Later, he would address a public meeting organised by the BJP at the Vajpayee grounds. Both the meetings are being organised at the same venue in Mandela Nagar, along the Inner Ring Road, with separate stages. aiko leads protest at Madurai Periyar bus stand.
In a major embarrassment for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling BJP, #GoBackModi is trending on Twitter. Thousands of other tweets, meanwhile, welcomed PM Modi to Madurai and thanked him for setting up AIIMS in the city. Hashtags like #MaduraiThanksModi and #TNWelcomesModi too are among the top trends on Twitter.
In April last year, when he had visited Chennai for the Defence Expo, #GoBackModi had trended.
Meanwhile, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko, who is protesting at the Madurai Periyar bus stand junction, says he will not leave till Prime Minister Modi leaves Madurai.
Showing black flags and setting off black balloons, Vaiko says, "Laying foundation stone for the AIIMS now was nothing but a political stunt and well timed ahead of the Lok Sabha election."
