A special court in Chennai on Friday awarded ten years rigorous imprisonment to former DMK legislator Rajkumar and his assistant Jaishankar for the rape and murder of a minor servant maid.
Special judge Shanthi held them guilty of raping and causing the death of the 15-year servant maid in 2012. The judge acquitted other accused for want of evidence.
Rajkumar, who represented Perambalur near Tiruchi, was arrested after the girl died in hospital following the rape and her parents petitioned the Madras High Court for action. The court referred it to the special court dealing with cases under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences POCSO) Act of 2012.
The victim was from Idukki district and she was hired as a domestic help by Rajkumar when he was MLA of Perambular from 2006 to 11. After the rape, his accomplice Jaishankar telephoned the girl’s parents in Idukki to say she had been admitted to hospital.
When parents suspected foul play, Government doctors conducted a post-mortem examination which confirmed that she had been raped. Thereupon, the Perambulur police arrested the two and the case was being heard by the sessions court.
Meanwhile, a special court was set up in Chennai to fast track cases against MPs and MLAs and this case was transferred to this court.
Rajkumar, Jaishankar and four others initially arraigned. One died during trial.
Special judge Shanthi convicted the first two accused, sentenced them to 10 yuears RI and imposed a fine of Rs 45,000 each. The others were acquitted.
This was the first case to be heard by the special court.
