New Delhi, Dec 11: Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday paid tributes to Tamil poet Subramania Bharatiyar who, he said, ''ignited resurgence in Tamil literature and drew inspiration from ancient sources of Indian culture''.
Addressing a gathering at an event to pay tributes to the great Tamil poet on his birth anniversary here, he said Thiru Bharatiyar left behind an extraordinary legacy of poetry and prose writings and his works gave form and vitality to present-day Tamil literature.
Bharatiyar, like Swami Vivekananda, lived briefly for only 39 years, but earned eternal name and fame by his words and deeds. Bharatiyar was also an ardent Indian nationalist and a fervent advocate of social reform, Mr Naidu noted. The Vice President said that the poet in one of his poems wrote that there was no caste system and it was a sin to divide people on caste basis. (UNI)
