Dindigul, Dec 5: Two persons died, while another was admitted to the Government Hospital after consuming liquor at Pallapatti village near Nilakottai in this Southern district on Wednesday.
Police said the dead were identified as R. Murugan (48) and T.Sairam (60), while Thangapandiyan (51) was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital at Madurai for treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that a group of tipplers consumed Indian-made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) sold illegally by one Jayachandran, this morning.
Murugan and Sairam vomited and collapsed. Both of them died enroute to the government hospital. Four others, who also consumed the liquor were treated and discharged from the hospital.
Jayachandran, who was running Chicken shop used to purchase different brands of liquor bottles from the nearby State-run TASMAC outlet and sell them to the tipplers illegally for higher price.
Though the exact cause of the deaths was not known immediately, police suspect Jayachandran might have sold expired liquor bottles. However, only after analysing the liquor samples seized from the shop, the reason could be revealed, police said.
The police are investigating the matter from all angles, including whether Jayachandran mixed any chemicals in it.
Senior police officials are investigating the case and a search is on to nab Jayachandran, who is at large. (UNI)
