The DMK on Tuesday held a massive protest meeting in Tiruchi attended by allies and fraternal parties to condemn the clearance given by the Modi Government to Karnataka to prepare a detailed report on a project to build a dam across Cauvery in Mekedatu.
Party president and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin who rallied the entire opposition barring the BJP behind him, warned Modi that the people of Tamil Nadu would never forgive him if he allowed the dam while other alliance leaders said the decision was politically motivated and in violation of the award of the tribunal and the Supreme Court ruling.
Recalling a resolution adopted at the last meeting of the DMK and its allies and other friendly parties, Stalin said the Tamil Nadu Government should immediately call an all –party meeting. Tamil Nadu Congress president S Thirunavakkarasar cited the statement of Cauvery Water Management Authority in New Delhi on Monday that though the Central Water Commission might have given clearance for the Detailed Project Report, no dam across Cauvery could be built without the approval of the authority. He said Modi Government had given the clearance despite this only to further the BJP’s prospects in Karnataka in the coming Lok Sabha elections.
He cited strong leaders from Tamil Nadu like Kamaraj, MGR, Karunanidhi and even Jayalalitha who courageously fought for the State’s rights. State CPM general secretary K Balakrishnan said the AIADMK Government was afraid of taking a strong line for fear of offending Modi.
Dravidar Kazhagam leader K Veeramani, said “we should prevent Modi not just from coming to Tamil Nadu, as we did last time, but from coming back to power”.
The meeting was also attended by Marumalarchi DMK leader Vaiko, CPI general secretary R Mutharasu, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalvan and Prof Khader Moideen, State president and national general secretary of the Indian Union Muslim League.
