Chennai. Oct 9: DMK President and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin on Tuesday urged the Tamil Nadu government to release Tamil magazine Nakkeeran Editor R R Gopal immediately or else face the consequences.
He was talking to reporters after meeting Gopal at the Kasthuriba government hospital, where he was taken for a medical examination
after his arrest at the Chennai airport for publishing defamatory articles linking the Governor's office after a woman assistant professor Nirmala Devi was arrested in the recent sex scandal.
Mr Stalin termed the arrest of the senior journalist as an affront on the freedom of press. Flaying the ruling AIADMK of adopting one set of rules for Gopal and others, and other set of rules for BJP National Secretary and actor S Ve Shekhar, he said if Mr Gopal was not released immediately and cases withdrawn, the State government has to face adverse consequencies.
Strongly condemning the arrest of Gopal, the DMK Chief said Mr Raja, who wanted the statues of Periyar to be razed down and made derogatory remarks about the HR and CE Staff, the judiciary and police was not yet been arrested. He said the state government had also not taken any action against Shekher, who made derogatory remarks against women journalists and was seen moving with police protection,
despite the Court refusing to stay his arrest.
Later, Stalin, accompanied by DMK Treasurer Duraimurugan and senior leaders, also met MDMK General Secretary Vaiko, who was arrested and taken to a marriage hall, for staging a dharna in front of Chinthadripet police station after he was denied permission to meet Gopal. (UNI)
