Delhi-based social activist and former Aam Aadmi party leader Yogendra Yadav was detained by the Tamil Nadu police on Saturday when he visited Tiruvannamalai district to meet farmers who are opposing the proposal for a Chennai-Salem expressway.
Yadav was taken into custody along with 34 other activists at Chengam in Tiruvannamalai where the maximum number of farmers face threat of losing their lands for the project.
Condemning the police action, Yadav told reporters that he got clearance from the district magistrate to visit Tiruvannamalai to meet the farmers who may be affected by the project.
The police took them into custody on the ground. that they might incite the farmers and thereby disturb public peace.
As the police aim was to prevent them from going to the affected villages, they may be released later.
