Seven persons, including two women, were killed and 31 injured in a head-on collision between two buses, one of which was going to Palakkad from Bengaluru, near Salem in the early hours of Saturday.
The dead were passengers of an omni bus which was going from Bengaluru to Palakkad, police said.
A four-year-old boy survived, but both his parents died in the accident.
The accident happened in the Salem-Bengaluru highway when a bus bound for Krishnagiri jumped the median to avoid a stationary truck and collided with an oncoming Palakkad omni bus.
All 31 injured were passengers of both the buses. Of them, 11 were women. They were admitted to the Government Hospital in Salem. Some of them were later shifted to a private hospital.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy who happened to be in Salem visited the injured in the Government hospital.
The identity of the dead and the injured was not immediately known.
