Chennai, Aug 28: The DMK General Council, at its meeting here on Tuesday, requested the Government of India to confer Bharat Ratna on late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi
The party by a resolution cited his record of public service as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for five terms, totaling 19 years, and legislator close to 50 years and pointed to several welfare measures initiated during his rule for the uplift of the poor.
It also hailed his service in ushering a coalition era at the Centre thanks to his contacts with national leaders ranging from Indira Gandhi to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi and with former Prime Minister V P Singh, H D Deve Gowda and his successor Inder Gujral and several top ranking leaders like Omar Abdullah, N T Rama Rao, Sharad Pawar and Jyoti Basu as well as top CPI and CPM leaders.
In seeking the highest civilian honour for Karunanidhi, the party has gone by the precedent when former Chief Minister and AIADMK leader M G Ramachandran was given the award posthumously.
The party condoled the death of former Prime Minister A B Vajpayee, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, former Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and even former UN Secretary-General Kofi Anan. It also expresses sympathy to the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the deluge in Kerala.
