Former Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi’s health suffered a setback on Monday morning. Following this, his first wife Dhayalu Ammal visited him in the Cauvery Hospital where he has been under intensive care for the past ten days.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president S Thirunavakkarasar, who rushed to the hospital, later told reporters, quoting Karunanidhi’s family members, said “there has been a setback in his health and he continues to be under intensive care”.
Karunanidhi’s son M K Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi left the hospital early on Monday morning and Dhayalu Ammal visited him shortly after noon. She was accompanied by his last son M K Tamilarasu, his son Arulnidhi, and his grandson Dayanidhi Azhagiri, son of the Madurai-based estranged eldest son.
This was Dhayalu Ammal’s first visit to the hospital. She is in her late 80s. The hospital has not issued any bulletin after it said on July 31 that there had been an age-related overall decline in his health. The visit of President Ram Nath Kovind to the hospital on Sunday indicated the seriousness of Karunanidhi’s condition.
Dhayalu Ammal and Kanimozhi, DMK Rajya Sabha member and daughter of second wife Rajathi, are co-accused in the 2G spectrum case as they were on the board of Kalaignar TV when A Raja was Union Telecom Minister and a beneficiary allegedly transferred Rs 200 crore to the channel as a quid pro quo for allotment of spectrum..
During the hearing, the defence took the plea that Dhayalu Ammal was only a nominal director and she had gone senile and so could not depose. Kanimozhi took the plea that she was on the board was only for a brief while.
Curiously, the Enforcement Directorate’s appeal against the discharge of Kanimozhi, Raja and others from the case by a special CBI court came up for hearing in the Delhi High Court today and the judge posted it to August 14.
