Telugu Desam Party (TDP) MLA Ravela Kishore Babu embarked on a “Deeksha” (Fast) in front of the District Collector’s office here on Friday, demanding the Centre to take steps to protect and strengthen the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
Babu demanded the Centre to strengthen the SC/ST Atrocities Act by enacting an ordinance. He said the Supreme Court verdict on the implementation of SC/ST Atrocities Act had diluted the Act, depriving the protection to the SC/STs.
The fasting MLA, who was the Social Welfare Minister in the Andhra Pradesh government earlier, talking to media said, that he launched the one-day fast in order to sensitize SCs /STs on how the Apex court diluted the AC/AT Atrocities Act and also to exert pressure on the Centre to pass an ordinance in this regard.
He said that he had appealed to President Ram Nath Kovind to take steps to protect the implementation of SC/ST Act but received no response. Mr Babu said that he would continue his deeksha till 7 PM tonight.
Large number of activists of various Dalit organisations, including MRPS, extended solidarity to the former Minister's fast. (UNI)
