Fadnavis’ security beefed up after email threats from Naxals

Security for Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family members have been stepped up after a death threat from Maoist organisations over the Gadchiroli encounter in which 40 Maoists were killed by the security forces in April.

Two letters threatening the Chief Minister and his family received on Friday, an official source said.

The Chief Minister said, "Many such communications have been seized during the raids and that the intelligence agencies are at work and the investigations are probing more links in this connection.

The state’s security apparatus has been thrown into a tizzy, with Pune police revealing a plot by Maoist groups to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Mantralaya receiving two death threat emails.

The state home department sounded an alert after the CMO also received two emails threatening Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family for the recent anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli district in April earlier this year. Following this development, the Chief Minister’s security cover has been beefed up.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr Fadnavis said the police have seized many documents, internal communications and hard disks of Maoists. One of the internal communications between a Naxal commander and his operatives talks of planning a Rajiv Gandhi type incident on Mr Modi.

'Terming it as a serious issue, Mr Fadnavis said the Naxals are 'trying to create a different atmosphere in the country. Police have seized these documents and are examining them. They have also unearthed the money trail.'

He added that a large group of urban Naxal sympathisers has deliberately been spreading falsehood among people. Asked about the two threat letters he received, Mr Fadnavis said, 'I have handed over the copies of the two emails to police." He refused to divulge further details.

Meanwhile, sources in the state home department have said following the April 23 anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli district, in which 16 Naxals were killed by the state’s elite anti-Naxal force, C-60, the CMO recently received the two emails threatening Mr Fadnavis and his family. Highly-placed sources said the email spoke of being inspired by the ideology of Marx. It said, "You cannot wipe out our ideology by killing some of our people. Scores will be settled for what happened in Gadchiroli." (UNI)
