Even though the issue of 'Ganna' (sugarcane) got better of Jinnah and Danga (Muzaffarnagar riot) during the Kairana Lok Sabha bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, still it was surprising that BJP suffered in the areas where the sugarcane dues were less.
The saffron party won the Shamli and and Kairana Assembly segments, but lost from Thana Bhawan, all three in Shamli district, while also losing in Nakur and Gangoh at Saharanpur district.
In three sugar mills of Shamli, the total sugarcane due was Rs 512.71 crore, but in three mills of Saharanpur, the due was just Rs 261.74 crore, which shows that Ganna was not at all a issue in the bypolls, as raked by the Opposition.
BJP got a drubbing in this by-election with a loss of over 24,000 votes, which became a decisive figure for the victory of RLD candidate Tabassum Hasan, who won by over 44,000 votes.
The Ganna and Jinnah issue was raised during the campaigning, when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that Jinnah should not be promoted in the country and pushed the sugarcane dues in the back burner, by only saying how much the government has paid to the cane farmers.
Mr Adityanath also raked up the Muzaffarnagar riot issue to hit out at SP and its partners.
The Opposition, particularly Rashtriya Lok Dal General Secretary Jayant Singh, had made the cane dues their top poll plank against the BJP government during the campaigning and ridiculed Mr Adityanath for raking up the Jinnah and Muzaffarnagar riot issue.
UP BJP president Mahendra Nath Pandey admitted that the party might had faltered in gauging the mood of the people in Kairana.
'Many issues like petrol price hike went against us. The worst part is government did well in payment of cane, still the Opposition was able to spread words about non-payment, which stuck,' he said here on Saturday.
The election result has made it clear that there is decisive shift of jat votes from BJP to RLD. The voter who went with BJP in Nagar Nigam and Assembly elections, this time voted for RLD.
The Muslims consolidated against the ruling party and the revival of Jat-Muslim combination with dalit throwing weight revived the old Muslim-Ahir-Jat-Gujjar and Dalit Jatav formula.
The Kairana bypoll is the fourth Lok Sabha by-election in the state since 2014. Apart from Gorakhpur and Phulpur, a by-election was also held for Mainpuri seat, vacated by SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2014.
Mulayam had won the Mainpuri and Azamgarh seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls and decided to retain the latter.
In the bypoll, Mainpuri seat was won by SP candidate Tej Pratap Singh Yadav. However, BJP has won only one by-election so far, of Sikendra. (UNI)
