Hundreds of DMK men today went on a march to Raj Bhavan in support of party president M K Stalin’s demand for the recall of Governor Banwarilal Purohit.
The protestors led by former Chennai Mayor M Subramaniam were stopped a kilometre before the Raj Bhavan and were taken into custody.Talking to reporters before courting arrest, Subramaniam said the Governor had ruled out a CBI enquiry into the scandal in the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) involving women professor Nirmala Devi of a college in Aruppokottai who allegedly tried to lure girls into sex trade with the promise of marks and money.
Subramaniam said that as Nirmala Devi had claimed that she had access to the Governor, he could not act as judge and jury and the official enquiry by him would be a farce.Stalin initially demanded only a court-monitored CBI enquiry but called for the recall of the Governor after Purohit called the press to assert that as Chancellor of universities, he did not have to consult the State Government.
Stalin wanted Chief Minister Edapadi K Palanisamy to protest to the President against the Governor’s decision to order an enquiry by retired IAS officer R Santhanam. As the AIADMK is not going to oblige him, Stalin has decided to treat it as yet another issue to agitate against the Government.
