Kerala Director General of Police (Prisons) R Sreelekha has said the jails in the state were facing space constraints due to overcrowding of inmates.
"The jails lack basic infrastructure and are are operating above maximum capacity. Due to lack of space, the Department is forced to send many on parole," the DGP said while attending a seminar in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday evening.
Alleging that the State Home Ministry was taking a 'step motherly' approach to Jail Department, she said jails in the state are not in a position to accommodate more inmates as several under trial prisoners were also housed in large numbers in many jails.
Urging the state government to take immediate steps to improve the facilities in jails, she said minimum standard for personnel living space in prisons could not be ensured in the given situation.
