Pennews

Two more legislators resigned as member of the Meghalaya Assembly ahead of the February 27 assembly polls, an official today said.

Following last night's resignation, the strength of the 60-member assembly has been reduced to 37. Independent legislator Julius Kitbok Dorphang and Independent legislator John Leslee Sangma submitted their resignation to Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal. Sangma joined the Nationalist Congress Party at a programme in Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills.

Dorphang, a former leader of the outlawed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council, is lodged in Shillong jail and facing trial in the case of raping a 14-year-old girl.
