A boy and a girl were expelled from a school in Kerala for hugging each other. Once the hugging incident spread through social media, the boy and the girl were expelled from the school by the authorities. But now the case is under the consideration of the Division Bench of the High Court (HC) of Kerala.
This incident of moral policing was happened on July 21. A Class XII student of St Thomas Central School at Mukkola in Trivandrum hugged a girl from Class XI after she won a prize at an arts competition in school. The boy claimed that it was a congratulatory hug after the girl sang a song and won a prize at the school festival. The boy had also uploaded pictures of the girl and him together on social media. The authorities suspended both the boy and girl from the school.
As per the complaint of the boy student, Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights had ordered the school to permit the boy to attend classes and continue his education. But this was challenged by St Thomas School’s management in the HC. And on December 12, a single bench of the HC quashed the commission’s order. The boy’s parents are now appealing against this decision to the Division Bench of the HC.
