The Congress high command expressed shock over the Solar Enquiry Commission report and the subsequent action by the CPM led state government.

The state cabinet's decision on Wednesday to prosecute several senior Congress leaders allegedly involved in the Solar scam has come in for the gravest embarrassment of the party and the UDF it heads. That the state cabinet chose the polling day at Vengara to act on the Solar Commission report submitted last week is viewed as politically significant. Observers therefore are of the view that there is more to it than meets the eye. KPCC president M.M.Hassan was quick to allege that this was political vendetta. But the fact of the matter is that whatever be the motives of the LDF regime, it is an unexpected stunning blow especially when the party has been disintegrated and its performance dismal for the past several months.

Rahul Gandhi has sought detailed report from Mukul Vasnik, the AICC secretary in charge of Kerala on the Solar developments. Opposition Leader in state assembly, Ramesh Chennithala is already in Delhi. He is expected to hold talks with the party high command. Interestingly, the list for nomination as office bearers of KPCC which is long due for reconstitution is before the Congress high command and all the leaders found guilty by Justice Sivarajan Commission in its report on Solar scam figure in the list.

KPCC has convened its political affairs panel for an urgent session on the LDF cabinet's proceedings on the Solar Commission report. UDF high power committee is also likely to meet soon to take stock of the latest situation and plan future course of action. For the Congress, this is no doubt a do or die situation. But much depends on how far CPM leadership, particularly Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is serious about the prosecution of Congress leaders allegedly involved in the Solar scheme. The sex aspect of the whole issue rather than the corruption involved gives the report and its aftermath a ticklish sensational dimension. It is to be noted that senior Congress leaders of stature like Ommen Chandy, Aryadan Mohammed, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, K.C.Venugopal, P.C. Vishnunath etc are charged of sexual misbehaviour incuding rape. The Congress party wiil therefore have to sweat out long to meet the challenge politically and legally. Former Chief Minister Ommen Chandy, the kingpin of Solar scam has however put on a brave face. "I am least worried", he said and added "truth shall triumph".
