Leading Karnataka businessman and son-in-law of former Union Minister and senior Karnataka Politician S M Krishna, VG Siddharth was in for a shock today with the sleuths of the Income Tax Department who raided more than 20 premises of his, across the State besides Mumbai and Chennai.
Multiple IT teams started the raids and searches in the early hours of the Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) promoter in the city, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan in Karnataka, besides Mumbai and Chennai.
The IT department has been pursuing Siddharth for some months now for alleged evasion of tax . Political experts feel that the BJP led NDA government at the centre is targeting its opponents through such actions, However the raid on Siddharth's properties came as a surprise as only recently S.M. Krishna a staunch Congressman, switched sides and joined the BJP, which with welcome hands received him, aiming to boost its sagging image in southern Karnataka, especially in Mandya district, the home of the former External Affairs Minister.
The details of the raids conducted in over 20 locations have not come out yet. They included CCD's Head office at the posh UB City complex in the city.
Apart from Cafe Coffee Day chain of coffee joints, Siddharth had interests in Hospitality sector vast coffee plantations and was also having a consultancy firm. He runs a luxury resort in Chikkamagaluru and a coffee curing centre in Hassan. Sources said the search operation was in tune with a case of alleged undisclosed income.
