Bhavani Amma, who had hit headlines after she gave birth to a baby boy at the age of 62 in 2004 through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), died at a private hospital in Wayanad on Monday. She was 75.
Hailing from Kavumkara in Muvattupuzha, the retired school teacher had set medical records of sorts in the state by giving birth to a baby in her advanced age, well past her menopause, through assisted reproductive technology and embryo transfer.
Bhavani Amma had opted to go for invitro fertilization (IVF) after she failed to conceive in her two marriages. She had given birth to the baby at a private infertility clinic at Thiruvananthapuram.
However, the joy of motherhood did not last long for Bhavani Amma as her son Kannan drowned in a bucket of water when he was hardly two years, leaving the old mother alone.
Following the death of her son, she had been shifting places and was living at Mananthavadi in Wayanad in a rented house for the past five years.
