A major tragedy in the sea off Kollam in Kerala was averted on Saturday by the timely intervention of fishermen. A ship from Hongkong named 'Kataliya' had hit a country boat. 'ArogyaAnnai', carrying fishermen from Kolachel. There were six fishermen on board the boat which capsized. However fishermen who were near the spot, though in other boats jumped into the sea and rescued those who fell down from 'ArogyaAnnai' .
All the six fishermen were rescued and brought to the shore. They were rushed to nearby hospital. The condition of none of them is serious according to police sources. The fishermen are natives of Kolachel in Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. They were on a fishing mission as usual when the ship hit their boat. The incident happened at around 39 nautical miles from the Kollam coast. This was close to the international shipping route.
Alarmingly similar accidents off Kollam coast are lately not uncommon. This calls for better vigilance by the coast guards and authorities concerned, opined representatives of fishermen community.
