Rajkot, Mar 10 : Aarpit Vasavada’s well-compiled century and Cheteshwar Pujara’s fifty put Saurashtra in a commanding position against Bengal on Day 2 of the Ranji Trophy final, here on Tuesday. Pujara had left the field on Day 1 due to illness, but the right-hander returned to the crease and faced the first ball of the morning to begin the proceedings on the second day.

While Bengal, who had struck late on the opening day, were looking for some quick wickets on Day 2, Vasavada and Pujara made sure Saurashtra did not lose any wickets in the first session. The two added 72 runs to Saurashtra’s overnight score as the Jaydev Unadkat-led side moved to 278/5 at lunch. The duo did not make too many changes to their approach and added 61 runs in the second session, which also saw Vasavada, who had scored a ton in the semi-final, complete a well compiled hundred and Pujara reaching his fifty.

The 142-run partnership between Vasavada and Pujara lasted for 380 balls and 297 minutes and was broken when the left-hander, who scored 106 off 287 balls, was stumped off Shahbaz Ahmed’s bowling in the third session. Soon after Vasavada’s dismissal, Mukesh Kumar ended Pujara’s 237-ball 66-run vigil as he trapped the right-hander before the stumps to give Bengal their seventh wicket of the match. Prerak Mankad was the next man to get out as Mukesh Kumar picked up his second wicket in the 153rd over of the match. Chirag Jani and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja then went on to negotiate the remainder of the overs before the close of play as Saurashtra ended the day at 384/8. (UNI)
