Covid-19: Indian Wells Masters cancelled; Wimbledon, French Open under threat

Los Angeles, Mar 10: The Indiana Wells Masters tennis tournament, the biggest event outside the four majors was cancelled on Tuesday due to the coronavirus outbreak.

This has put other major tournaments under threat including majors like Wimbledon and the French Open and the Miami Open, which is due to start on 25 March.

The European clay season which is due to begin next month, there is mounting speculation about the viability of the Monte Carlo Open (whose directors are expected to decide within the next 10 days), including the Madrid, Barcelona and Rome tournaments, leading up to the French Open.

The cancellation of the tournament is expected to cause a financial loss of 50 million pounds. for the Indian Wells and the Miami open would also face similar losses.

If the Covid-19 wrecks the tennis calendar in 2002, it is expected that the losses would be in billions of dollars.(UNI)
