Pune, Jan 21: Defending champions India had a dream start at the ICC U-19 World Cup as they defeated Srilanka by 90 runs in the opening group encounters at Bloemfontein in South Africa.
After scoring 297/4, India bundled out the island nation for a mere 207 in 45.2 overs and Siddhesh Veer from Sinhgad Institutes (SI) was awarded 'Man of the Match' for his all-round performance on January 19. The 18-year-old all-rounder had a great outing with both bat and the ball, scoring quick-fire unbeaten 44 runs in 27 deliveries and taking two wickets, SI said in a statement here on Tuesday.
The budding cricketer was awarded 'Man of the Match' for his quick-fire unbeaten 44 runs in 27 deliveries including 6 boundaries and a six. The Institute further said that coming to bat at number six in the 43rd over, Siddhesh displayed excellent cricketing skills with drives, straight drives, reverse sweeps and the most awesome boundary shot right over the wicket keeper’s head. He took the wicket of well-set opener Sri Lanka Captain Kamil Mishara and the wicket of allrounder Amishi de Silva, bowling right arm off spin, it added.
The budding cricketer hails from Bhor, a small town in Maharashtra and he is pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce from Sinhgad College of Arts at Narhe Campus. He has been representing the State in U-14, U-16 and U-19 consecutively since last 6 years. Expressing his gratitude to his professors, the excellent sports facilities and learning atmosphere at the SI, Siddhesh credits his success to his beloved father Ashok Veer, an advocate by profession who gave up his career to make a cricketer out of him. Coaching him right from a tender age, Mr Ashok took his son for practice as well as matches regularly and motivated him always. (UNI)
