New Delhi, Nov 16: India women's team football skipper Ashalata Devi on Friday was nominated for the AFC Player of the Year at the AFC Annual Awards which will take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on December 2.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is one of three federations named as nominees for AFC President Recognition Awards for Grassroots Football (Developing) category. Ashalata, has been instrumental in taking India to Olympic 2020 Qualifiers Round 2 and were also crowned champions of SAFF 2019.
For 2018-19 the AIFF also voted her as Women's Player of the Year.
China's Li Ying and Japan's Saki Kumagai were also nominated for the AFC Player of the Year award in women's category. The nomination coincides with the launch of the Golden Baby Leagues earlier this year, which will lay emphasis on young children between ages under 6 to under 12 as they form the golden age for learning – both for girls and boys.
It has already started making waves across the country – and is aimed at enabling a smoother transition for young kids who aim to make it big and popularize the sport across India. (UNI)
