Rio De Janeiro, Nov 3 : The son of football legend Pele has been appointed the youth academy technical director of Brazilian Serie A club Santos, just weeks after his release from jail.

Edson Cholbi Nascimento, known as Edinho, will be responsible for coordinating the club's junior teams and will report to former Brazil international midfielder Renato, who is the director of football.

"We wish him good luck in this new challenge," Santos said in a statement on the club's official website.

In September, Edinho was granted a request to serve the rest of a 12-year jail term at home as a reward for good behavior. He was originally given a 33-year prison sentence in 2014 for laundering money to a drug gang.

The 49-year-old had the penalty reduced to 12 years and 11 months in February 2017 following an appeal. Edinho made nine first-team appearances for Santos as a goalkeeper in the 1990s before embarking on a coaching career.

His father is considered one of the best footballers in history as the scorer of more than 1,000 career goals and winner of three World Cups. (UNI-XINHUA)
