Chandigarh, Oct 30 : A dazzling performance by Pratap Lakra, who pumped in four successive goals, paved the way for South Central Railway upset Punjab and Sind Bank whom they beat by 5-1 in the 48th S.N. Vohra’s All India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Sector 42 Hockey Stadium here today. With this win SC Railway qualified for semi-final.
Starting on a whirlwind fashion, Lakra opened his and his team's account in the eighth minute by converting a penalty stroke. SC Railway earned a penalty corner in the ninth minute an Lakra did not make any mistake in converting it into goal to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Pratap Lakra then converted penalty strokes in the 21st minute to complete his hat-trick and in the 34th minute he again converted another penalty stroke as SC Railway established a commanding 4-0 lead, Belsajr and Ranjodh contributed one goal each by scoring in the 50th and 55th minutes, respectively and SC Railway emerged 5-1 winners.
Central Railway of Mumbai edged out Hockey Patiala with a 2-1 verdict. Central Railway scored through Yuvraj (3rd) and Rajendra (18th) minutes. Gurshahzad reduced the margin for Hockey Patiala by converting a penalty corner in the 54th minute.
In the third match of the day, Punjab Police, who led 3-1 at half time, defeated Central Reserve Police Force by 2-0.
Gurvinder, Dharamvir and Balwinder struck in the 11th, 21st and 29th minutes to give Punjab Police a 3-0 lead. Bikash converted a penalty corner in the 30th minute for CRPF's first goal. Ignacios Toppo got field goal in the 47th minute for CRPF to reduce the margin (2-3).
Punjab Police hit back and forced another penalty corner and this time Dharambir converted it and the policemen won by 4-2.
After today's fixtures were completed semi-finals have been spotted. SC Railway will meet Central Railway (2 p.m) and Punjab Police will challenge Punjab National Bank (3.30 p.m) in the semi-final matches on November 3.
November 1 and 2 are the rest days.
