Rosario, Argentina, Oct 30: Diego Maradona's Gimnasia La Plata kept alive their hopes of remaining in Argentina's top division with a 4-0 victory at Newell's Old Boys on Tuesday.
Leandro Contin scored just before halftime before Maxi Caire, Horacio Tijanovich and Matias Garcia netted second half goals as the visitors secured their second win since Maradona took charge on September 5.Gimnasia rose one place to 23rd in the 24-team standings with two wins, one draw and eight losses.
Newell's, whom Maradona represented as a player in 1993 and 1994, paid the 1986 World Cup winner a moving 30-minute tribute before the match. Home fans chanted his name while holding up a giant banner adorned with an image of Maradona in his playing days at the Rosario club.
Newell's officials then presented him with a series of gifts, including an illustration of the former Napoli idol holding hands with his daughters Dalma and Gianinna while decked out in the club's early 90s kit.
"This is fantastic, I didn't expect it," Maradona said of the special celebration. "It was a night to savor. Nobody thought that Gimnasia could have a team like this."The former forward drew delirious cheers from Newell's fans when he finished a short speech by vowing to "one day return" to the Marcelo Bielsa stadium.(XINHUA)
